Notes on Leroy Frodsham Sr and Lucile Gray and Children

Leroy Edward "Ed" Frodsham was a man without a family at age 23.  His mother died in 1903, his brother died in enemy action in WWI, his sister died young and his father died in 1923, leaving him the only living member of the family.  He married Lucile Gray in 1921 and started a family on the family homestead (apparently in a sheep wagon).  See Richfield History.  He moved his family to Butte, MT, and worked for the Great Northern Railroad.  He and Lucile divorced after the birth of their youngest daughter.  He then married Mary Fullerton (26 JUL 1898-13 DEC 1962), License #63533, moving into her house on Idaho street in Butte.  They were married about 1948 in Butte, Montana.

She was always our grandmother and always had treats for us when we went to visit them, but we always called her "Mary."

She is the one that had all of the Frodsham pictures on the wall that are included in this site.

Mary died in Butte, Silver Bow, Montana in 1962.  Her death certificate #63533.  She is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Butte.

Bessie Vigurs Hansen and grandpa married in Butte, Montana 7 SEP 1968.  Marriage license #1724.  She lived until about 1993 and died in Butte.

Grandpa was quite the checker player.  I learned to play checkers with him.  He quit smoking at the age of 67.

He always told me that we were descended from "Napoleon" and related to "Queen Elizabeth."  I found out doing genealogy that he was correct as far as Napoleon.... His grandmother was Julie Ann Zabriskie and she had an uncle named Napoleon Bonaparte Zabriskie.  I haven't yet connected Queen Elizabeth!  Apparently grandpa had a dry sense of humor.  He also said we were connected to "Sam Houston."  I haven't connected him either, but apparently there is a Sam Houston Frodsham or Sam Houston Gray out there somewhere.  I'm sure Queen Elizabeth is an Aunt Elizabeth Frodsham!

Enid Lucile Gray was always known as Lucile and that spelling is correct.  I have seen Enid written on legal documents only twice.  Once on the 1910 Census when she was living with her aunt Sarah Rice in Frost, Navarro County, TX and on my dad's death certificate.

She lost her mother at a young age and went to live with her unmarried aunt and a number of other relatives.

My aunt always said she was a Mail Order Bride, but I can find no connection to this unless - Her father-in-law to be Frank Claudius Frodsham had a sister named Clara and they were both living in Sumpter, Baker County, Oregon.  According to the 1900 census his sister Clara was married to a John Gray.  I have found no connection to Lucile Gray's family, but it is not impossible that they were related and hence a letter back and forth and Lucile came to Idaho to be married.

Her background is spotty and information is often and frequently wrong.  On her marriage license #1 it says she was born in Orange, Orange County, TX.  Another source says San Antonio, Bear (sic) County, Texas.  Actually, she probably was born in or near Frost, Texas.

She would have been 16 when she married Leroy Frodsham in Idaho, License #55569.  They later moved to Butte, Montana and she filed for divorce twice -  #35831 was dismissed and #35870 was filed 26 DEC 1935 and final on 16 NOV 1936.  The children's ages were 13,12,10, 8, 6 & 4.  There was one still born child born between the last 2.

She later married Francis Doyle in Butte and divorced him and then married David A. Howe in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, MT.

There are numerous errors on her death certificate, too.  She died at the age of 40 from gall bladder surgery.

She apparently had quite a bit of contact with her father "Nealy" Gray as there is a lot of correspondence that a cousin of mine has (some I have photo copied).  Some of the children went and stayed with him in Texas, as did Lucile occassionally.

The Helena Newspaper was on strike in October of 1945, so we have no news account of her death.  Her Social Security Number on SSDI is even missing a number!

Communicated with a Rice cousin's family and received photo's of the Rices and Rawls buried in the Frost Cemetery.

We also have a photo of her grave that we will put on the gravestone page.

We have a number of birth certificates, marriage licenses and divorce and death certificates of the children.  Some are still living, so that is private, but the rest I will get to when I get the time.

If time permits I will publish each item here.

Leroy "Roy" Edward Frodsham  was the eldest child of Leroy and Lucile.  He was born in 1922, but most records have him being born in either 1921 or 1920, even.  On a marriage license in 1947 he states his age as 29 which would have had him being born in 1918.....

He spent part of his young life in the juvenile detention home as did his brothers after his parents devorced.  He was working in Hawaii as a civilian construction worker when Pearl Harbor was bombed.  He always said

Leroy "Roy" Edward Frodsham and the Family Skeleton!

Once upon a time there was a soldier on leave from the army.  He had a wife who was expecting their first born in June.  He and an old army buddy named Carl Lee went to Oklahoma to visit Carl's family.  Carl had a sister named Ollie Mae.

Some of this story is second hand by this time, but apparently, over the course of this vacation, Roy convinced Ollie May to wed.  (There is controversy over whether there was a legal ceremony - at this time I haven't seen a license).  Anyhow, marry they did and she soon became "with child."

Meanwhile, back in Montana, wife #1 was writing and telling hi to get home!  Back in Oklahoma, he was telling wife #2 that the letters were from his sister.

Somehow - her father found out that his son-in-law already had a legal wife.  Being a smart man, Roy decided to get out of town - fast.  He "borrowed a car."
What wasn't so smart was "borrowing" the new or 2nd father-in-laws car to make his get away.  He was found in Duncan, Stevens County, Oklahoma.

Father-in-law 2 apparently pressed charges and dad went to prison for 5 years in McAlester at the State Prison.  He was Honorably Discharged from the Army during this time and also became a father three times.  Montana wife had a son in June and six weeks later Oklahoma wife gave birth to premature twins of which one survived.  Oklahoma wife then divorced him and after his release in 2 1/2 years for "Good-Behavior" he returned to wife #1 and they lived happily ever after.

Fast Forward......to the mid 90's......Child #2 from marriage #2 calls child #1 from Marriage #1.....The rest is History.

The moral of the story is - if you have two wives expecting two children at or near the same time - the safest place for you probably IS in prison!
